Habanera was founded on the first of April 2000 by Martijn Stroeven and Erik Jan Lingen. They came to know each other while they were working as PhD students at the Delft University of Technology. During this period, Martijn developed a software program for simulating the dynamic behavior of large collections of particles that interact with each other and with their environment. This program has been used to analyze the spatial distribution of gravel in concrete, to simulate the hydration of cement and to determine the optimal gravel mixture for road surfaces.

The PhD research of Erik Jan involved the development of a software package that is able to run large-scale finite element simulations on parallel computers. This package has been used, among others, to simulate the delamination of composite materials, the propagation of cracks in concrete, the diffusion of heat in fluid flows and the mechanical behavior of structures subjected to dynamic loads.

At the end of 1999 we got the idea to combine large parts of our software into a single platform for developing advanced numerical software. Encouraged by a favorable economic climate and a growing interest in our software, we decided to start our own company to realize our idea.

In the next ten years Habanera built a numerical toolbox, named Jive, that has been in use at several universities. On top of this toolbox we have built several special-purpose applications that are being used to perform advanced simulations, including crack growth and granular flows. In addition we used our experience to help other companies improve their numerical software. In fact, this became a large part of our business.

During these ten years Habanera remained a two-person company. This helped us staying flexible and profitable, but it also hindered us in the development of our software. We frequently lacked the man power to implement novel ideas and applications.

Hence, at the end of 2010, we decided to join the Dynaflow Research Group. This step will provide us more possibilities to develop and market our own software tools. It will also provide new possibilities to develop numerical applications that can be used to solve complex and practical engineering problems.
